Initially influenced by Grieg and Dvorak, Basque composer Andrés Isasi studied under Humperdinck in Berlin, where he acquired a love of Germanic culture, reflected in both Quartets heard on this recording. The violin Sonata, which incorporates traditional Basque songs, evokes the French music of the beginning of the century in its phrasing and harmonies. Interestingly, the piano plays a very important role, at times even more so than the violin. Violinist Ana Bohigas thrives in this performance of the Sonata together with superb pianist Marta Zabaleta.
